Solar database for iMaps and pvPlanner is being extended to cover South America

Full funcionality of iMaps and pvPlanner is available for most of South American continent. Solar radiation data for the western part (Chile and surrounding countries) is derived from GEOS-EAST satellite data, which are analyzed for a period 2006 to 2011 with a 30-minute to 3-hour temporal resolution. The period will be extended to cover 1999 to 2011 in the close future. The eastern part (Brasilia and surrounding countries) is derived from Meteosat satellites, operating in the PRIME region. Presently, solar radiation data for a period 1994 to 2004 in a 30-minute temporal resolution are available for iMaps and pvPlanner. This period will be extended to 1994 to 2011.

Air-temperature dataset updated to global coverage

SolarGIS users benefit from global coverage of Air-temperature data. Original data source NCEP CFSR, containing data from a period 1989-2009 with a temporal resolution 1 hour, has been preprocessed by in-house developed algorithms and agregated characteristics has been calculated for the users of iMaps, pvPlanner and climData applications.
Compared to the previous data source (ERA Interim), NCEP numerical models deliver data in higher resolution and globally in better quality. The unique cartographic representations of some of the calculated characteristics reveal many inter-relations connected to local and global climate.

Solar database for iMaps and pvPlanner features 17 years of data!

The calculation of solar radiation data for the period 1994-2010 has been completed for PRIME region (covering most of Europe, Africa and Middle East). Updated database with 17 years of data has been released for iMaps and pvPlanner and replaced the previous version, which featured with 7 years data.
The main benefit of the updated database is that the longer period of data better represents the "average" climate (statistically include all types of weather conditions in some area and smooth the impact of short-term extreem weather situations). More information can be find in the most recent press release.

According to IEA SHC Task 36 study, SolarGIS is the best performing database

The recent IEA SHC Task 36 data inter-comparison activity, lead by Pierre Ineichen from University of Geneva, has independently confirmed that SolarGIS is the best performing solar radiation database presently available on the market. The major strengths of SolarGIS are in the balanced statistical representation of the values (histograms), very good accuracy in GHI and excellent accuracy in DNI. The low RMSE makes it best performing for a system performance assessment and for monitoring.

Idea

An idea turns into reality – SolarGIS is launched. For almost a decade, the authors of SolarGIS (also the main co-authors of popular PVGIS system) had been playing with the idea of launching a service that would provide online access to high-resolution climate data, maps, software and services for solar energy- all under one roof. The intensive development of the database and software applications started in 2007.
